THE LINK’S HISTORY
Civic, Education and Cultural Involvement
The Links, Incorporated, founded in 1946, is an international non-profit corporation and one of the oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of women, who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. Margaret Rosell Hawkins and Sarah Strickland Scott co-founded and organized The Links with a three-fold aim toward civic, education, and cultural involvement. Based on these purposes, The Links would implement programs which its founders hoped would foster cultural appreciation through the arts, through development of richer inter group relations, and through the participation of women in social and civic responsibilities. The first National Assembly was held in Philadelphia in 1949. Delegates were present from Atlantic City, Baltimore, Central New Jersey, Petersburg, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, Saint Louis, Wilmington, Delaware, and Wilson Rocky Mount-Tarboro Chapters. The Links organization was incorporated in 1951.

The Silver Spring (MD) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, volunteers thousands of service hours and donates funding towards Montgomery County communities through our five program facets: Services to Youth, The Arts, National Trends and Services, International Trends and Services and Health and Human Services.
Services To Youth
The Services to Youth facet is an integrated approach to preparing young people to succeed in the 21st century workforce and beyond. The Services to Youth Program was created in response to the academic, cultural, health, social awareness, career development, and mentoring needs of youth in our underserved comunities.
The Arts
The origin of The Arts facet can be traced to our cultured co-founder Margaret Roselle Hawkins. Her passion for creative expression led to the establishment of The Arts facet in 1964 at the 14th National Assembly. The focus of The Arts facet is to provide opportunities and enhance the knowledge and appreciation of art for youth and adults.
National Trends and Services
National Trends and Services encompasses programs and committees with national partners and sponsors, each committed to focusing on eliminating disparities by reducing barriers to services through advocacy, education, and service while continuing to promote programming designed to foster individual and community empowerment.
International Trends and Services
The mission of the International Trends and Services facet is to expand the global platform for programs designed and developed to service the educational, health and cultural needs of people of African descent throughout the world. The components of the facet are delivered through measurable and sustainable service delivery methods that reach women and their families.
