In response to government actions that have created financial uncertainty for many Americans, the Silver Spring (MD) Chapter of The Links, Incorporated, took proactive steps to address these challenges. During its February chapter meeting, leadership and members engaged in a thoughtful discussion about the economic concerns affecting our members and community. Committed to equipping members with practical financial knowledge, the chapter explored effective strategies for navigating financial instability. One key initiative that emerged from this discussion was the organization of a financial wellness webinar, hosted by the chapter’s National Trends and Services (NTS) Facet for active Chapter and Alumna members.
Leveraging the professional expertise of esteemed chapter member Link Lori Jones Gibbs, the facet organized an impactful one-hour webinar entitled Money Mojo: Take Control & Thrive in Any Economy. With her extensive executive leadership experience in the banking industry, Link Lori provided invaluable insights and practical strategies, including boosting credit scores, recognizing and avoiding common “money stealers,” identifying simple ways to find extra funds, navigating financial support programs, and planning expenses in six-month intervals. This session was designed to equip members with practical financial knowledge applicable to their own financial planning, while also enabling them to thoughtfully support loved ones who may turn to them for help during these uncertain economic times. The webinar was beneficial not only for those immediately impacted by economic shifts but also for any sisters seeking to take proactive steps in safeguarding their household budgets.
Throughout the session, Link Lori shared expert guidance on essential money management topics, engaging participants with a lighthearted and relatable approach. Members resonated with her sound advice, often nodding in agreement as she provided actionable strategies for financial stability. The interactive nature of the webinar allowed attendees to participate in a Q&A session covering a wide range of relevant financial topics, including educating young people about credit, understanding debt and equity, and making informed decisions regarding bonuses and dividends.
A key takeaway from the discussion was Link Lori’s emphasis on overcoming fear and anxiety related to finances, especially in today’s climate. She encouraged attendees to gain clarity on their personal living income, empowering them to make intentional financial plans for the future. By increasing financial awareness and fostering confidence in money management, the webinar provided members with the tools needed to navigate economic uncertainty with resilience.
Special recognition goes to the National Trends and Services leadership, Link Cynthia Overton and Link Ellen Griffiths, for their efforts in coordinating this well-attended event. A heartfelt thank you to Link Lori Jones Gibbs for facilitating the discussion and providing invaluable guidance to members seeking financial empowerment.
The Silver Spring (MD) Chapter remains committed to supporting its members and the broader community through initiatives that promote financial literacy and empowerment. The Money Mojo webinar exemplifies the chapter’s dedication to ensuring that financial wellness remains a priority, equipping individuals with the knowledge and confidence to thrive in any economic environment.
