HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES
Silver Spring (MD) Chapter
The Health and Human Services facet was established to address the chronic health disparities that persist in our communities and contribute to the decreased life expectancy of African Americans. The prevalence of cardiovascular disease, stroke, obesity, diabetes, and physical inactivity continues to rise in communities of color, despite being modifiable risk factors. Additionally, African American women experience higher mortality rates from breast cancer, and early detection is critical for effective treatment and improved survival outcomes.
The mission of this facet is to promote and implement programs that support good health and the elimination of chronic health disparities in communities of color through education, health advocacy, and access to essential health resources. We also encourage our members to adopt and model healthy lifestyles and disease prevention strategies, ensuring that we exemplify the behaviors we advocate for within our communities.
The Silver Spring (MD) chapter also works to expand access to resources, leverage technology, and enhance strategies that support student learning, ensuring a holistic approach to health and education within the community.
